The University of the South Pacific held its annual awards last night celebrating and acknowledging their Journalism students.
For USP’s outstanding Journalism Graduate, Solomon Islander Rosalie Nongebatu, the award is the culmination of three years of commitment and sacrifice.
Nongebatu who initially worked in the mainstream media for more than a decade before pursuing her studies says formal qualifications have never been more necessary in the region
“We have a lot of challenges going on in the region right now so it’s really important that us Journalists have a better understanding of what’s at play especially the geopolitics, climate change so we can report more effectively on the issues so that people can understand, so I think a qualification is a must for us Journalists in the Pacific.”
Meanwhile, Fijian Sereana Salalo who picked up Best Sports Journalist, says she wants to inspire more young women to take up an otherwise male-dominated area
There were 12 categories for the awardees which included Best Environmental Reporting and Best Regional Reporting to name two.
