Flooding still an issue on Grieg street

December 8, 2016 5:12 pm

Road renewal work on Suva’s Greig Street is now complete and awaits the opening of the new Fiji National Provident Fund building.

However, the Fiji Roads Authority is concerned about the overflow from Nabukalou Creek onto Greig Street, which needs detailed investigation and investment.

Chief Executive Officer John Hutchinson say current work is to improve the road surface and does not address the historic flooding in the low lying area adjacent to the tidal creek.

Hutchinson says seawalls within the Municipal boundaries are the responsibility of the Suva City Council.

He adds raising the road level appears a simple solution to many, but without a detailed hydrological survey there is a high risk of causing increased flood damage to properties on Greig Street.

Hutchinson says raising the road level will flood both the road and the shops on the ground floor.

The FRA proposes raising the seawall to a more consistent height.
