Flood destroys crops and vegetables in farming community

Farmers in a small community in Nausori are still counting the cost from the flooding yesterday which has destroyed hundreds of crops and left whole farms inundated in floodwaters.

As water in Baulevu area slowly recedes, many low-lying farms remain underwater with crops demolished.

Ranjila Devi, whose main source of income comes from farming, says for people like her, the flood means heavy financial loss.

“Our farms have been damaged. We had planted plenty crops such as cucumber, pumpkin, bean and okra which is all damaged and under water.”

Another farmer Ratu Ram Samujh says their hard-work has gone down the drain.

“It’s been raining for a week, now it has flooded. This is very bad as we have lost a lot of our crops.”

According to other farmers in the area, things are very tough, not just financially but emotionally.
