Fisheries officials will be carrying out their inspections at the markets as we draw closer to the festive season.

This is to ensure that are no banned species of fish are being sold.

“They still continue to use it because the attraction is always there. If the market is available then people are able to export overseas and then they will continue to try and find a way to be able to go under the radar of the law to be able to harvest this and sell it to the exporters.”

The Ministry says these illegal fishing methods range from dynamite fishing, use of poisonous chemicals and the use of underwater breathing apparatus.
