Firefighters working around the clock at the Vunato Dump

August 22, 2018 12:59 am

It may take at least two to three weeks to fully control and stop the Vunato Rubbish Dump which has been emitting thick smoke to residents living close to the dump and even to parts of Lautoka City.

Lautoka City Council CEO Jone Nakauvadra says the National Fire Authority has been working around the clock to ensure that any part of the dump which may still be burning is extinguished.

Nakauvadra says that this situation is different from a bush fire as the rubbish beneath the dump may still be burning which is hard for the firefighters to identify.

He says while they sympathize with those that are affected by the smoke, they are doing all they can to ensure the situation is controlled.

Meanwhile an investigation is still underway to ascertain the cause of the fire which started on Monday.
