The formalisation of informal settlements in peri-urban areas and improving sanitation were amongst submissions made by residents of Newtown, Nasinu during the National Development Plan consultations.
Loraine Tevi a resident of Newtown says Government should look into formalising informal settlements which according to some residents contribute to the high rate of unemployment and increases the crime rate.
They’ve also called for more programs in the health ministry to assist in the prevention of Non-Communicable Diseases for the next five to twenty years.
Nasinu resident Semi Drau during the consultations highlighted the need for the government to look at creating more employment opportunities for the youths in Fiji.
Other issues highlighted included more stringent measures in the safety and security of the community in relation to recent rape cases, teenage pregnancy and the need to improve road conditions in the area.
Strategic Planning officer Sandeep Kumar was overwhelmed with the response from the community saying there’s still a need for people to make the best use of the consultation forums.
