Fijians living in flooded areas to boil all drinking water

The Health Ministry is urging Fijians living in flooded areas to boil all drinking water for at least 1 minute before drinking.

People in flooded areas are to also avoid swimming/bathing in muddy water or flood waters to avoid getting diseases like leptospirosis.

The public are advised to take preventative measures to protect themselves from common sicknesses such as diarrhoea and typhoid fever.

The ministry is also urging people to seek medical advice from their nearest health facility if they have a fever, headache, and vomiting or notice blood in stool.

Fijians are to avoid swimming in flooded waterways as drowning is a common cause of death during cyclones and flooding.

The Ministry says that damaged water supply systems during flooding may result in water sources becoming contaminated.

Fijians are reminded to stay alert and keep up with the latest weather and preparation updates from the National Disaster Management Office and the Fiji Meteorological Service.
