Some Fijians are intentionally violating the ban on catching, storing and selling of the grouper fish Kawakawa and Donu according to the Fisheries Ministry.
Acting Permanent Secretary of Agriculture Ministry, Naipote Katonitabua says a 4 month ban which ends next month is currently in place for these fish species to allow them to breed.
Katonitabua says some Fijians continue to ignore those fishing, selling and consuming Kawakawa and Donu despite the ban in place.
”It is evident that fishers are finding it harder to catch these species and therefore it is harder for them to make a living. Communities are also getting less of these iconic fish to maintain the health of their people.”
Meanwhile, Katonitabua says it’s disappointing to see that people are not doing enough to protect these fish species despite 90 percent of their breeding sites have been lost.
