June 27, 2014 6:00 am

A large number of Fijians are turning up to have their passports renewed with the team of Immigration Officers currently in the US.

The team, led by Senior Immigration Officer Naibuka Vuli is renewing passports and processing citizenship applications for Fijians in San Francisco, Sacramento, Hayward, San Rafael and Santa Rosa.

According to the US Times Fiji newspaper, the team found that a large number of Fiji nationals whose passports had either expired or reported lost, could not find the time to apply for a new one.

Some also had difficulties in contacting the Fiji Embassy in Washington.

Vuli says it is essential and convenient for Fiji citizens there to possess a valid passport and also pursue the prospects of obtaining Dual Citizenship.

He also stressed that US citizens who are married to Fijians also have legal rights to live in Fiji, and need not apply for a residency visa.

Former Fiji national Nick Khelawan says they are encouraged by the new incentives introduced by the Fijian government and the visit by the Immigration Team has certainly made them more aware of the progress back home.
