Fijians are encouraged to participate in Friday’s national sports and wellness day with many activities and free public health screening organized for the celebration.
Director for Youth and Sports George Francis says there will be free screening available in some venues and this is a great opportunity for everyone to take advantage of.
The theme of this year’s celebration is “A healthy Fiji starts with You” and Francis says beating non-communicable diseases starts with the individual.
He says Friday’s celebration is a good platform to advocate this growing killer disease.
“As a nation we can only do that when it’s individual chooses, practices and also lives a healthy lifestyle and it is through the individual agreeing to combat the NCD crisis in Fiji than the families will participate in it as well.”
Around 42 venues around the country will be hosting the day’s celebration including those in the maritime islands and Rotuma.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has confirmed around $50,000 has been set aside for the celebration.
