Fijian Chinese community celebrates 160th anniversary

The Chinese community held celebrations today to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the arrival of the first settlers to Fiji.

Prime Minister and Chief Guest, Voreqe Bainimarama acknowledged and commended their contribution to the country over the years.

“Fiji’s Chinese community has enriched Fiji’s culture and help develop our economy, the relatively small size of our Chinese community bellies a large impact they have had on our development, through your resourcefulness and diligence the Chinese community in Fiji has produced a succession of leaders in business, medicine, education and a wide range of other sectors.”

The Fiji Chinese Association also held a soft launch of the book, “The Chinese in Fiji” which incorporates stories of the early settlers.

The book will be available publicly in the near future.
