April 28, 2012 8:07 pm

The Fijian government will fund its own electronic voter registration exercise which will begin in June.

The confirmation was made to FBC News by the Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Following the announcement of the constitution consultation process earlier this year, Australia and New Zealand stepped up to jointly fund the EVR but on certain conditions.

They wanted direct contact with CODE Inc. the Canadian company responsible for Fiji’s first ever electronic voter system.

While the interest was welcomed by the government, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum made it clear then that Fiji will not allow a third party to dictate terms on issues regarding the welfare of Fiji and its people.

It’s now been been decided that Fiji will pay for the entire process.

Over five million dollars has been set aside in the 2012 budget for the registration.
