Fiji TV granted 12 year licence

Fiji Television Ltd has been granted a twelve year licence by the government.

For the last 4 years, the media outlet had been getting only six month extensions.

Making the announcement this afternoon Minister for Communications Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says along with the extension the government expects more from Fiji TV.

“We have put other conditions, as we can do under the law, that is putting alot of emphasis on local content, local content in the development of television is critical, previously we have seen when specific hours of local content has benn put in people have tried to fulfill that with local sports, local content is not about local sports.”

Parent company Fijian Holdings Limited Chief Executive Nouzab Fareed says, they are delighted with the decision and will comply with the conditions through added investments.

The initial six months licence was to have ended on Tuesday.
