Fiji strengthens ties with Afghanistan

Fiji’s first non resident Ambassador to Afghanistan Yogesh Karan this week presented his credential to the President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai in Kabul, Afghanistan.

At the accreditation ceremony, the two countries vowed to work closely together to enhance and expand diplomatic ties.

President Karzai conveyed his best wishes to his Fijian counterpart Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and was pleased with the strengthening of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Fiji established its formal diplomatic relation with Afghanistan in June 2010.

Ambassador Karan also met with senior government ministers including Foreign Affairs Minister Zarar Ahmad Osmani and Minister of Commerce and Industries Muzamil Shinwari.

Discussions were made on possible trade opportunities especially exporting of Afghanistan made goods to Fiji.

About 20 Fijian solders serving in the British Army are currently deployed to key troubled areas of the country.
