Fiji rated 2nd highest of diabetic deaths in the world

Fiji is ranked as the second highest country in the world for people dying from diabetes.

This was revealed by President, Jioji Konrote while launching the World Diabetes Day today.

Konrote says an amputation is done every eight hours and this is an alarming statistic.

“This is very alarming but what is more alarming is that our people are neglecting the fact that diabetes like all other NCDs is controllable, it is within our abilities to choose a healthy life style to eat fresh and healthy foods instead of processed foods."

This is a concern as Fiji was only ranked 20th in 2015.

Konrote says many people are losing limbs because of the choices they make in life.

He says this should change in order to live a longer healthy life.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders have organized health screenings, lectures and other activities at Sukuna Park tomorrow to raise more awareness on diabetes.
