Fiji offering to offset carbon emissions

Fiji is offering to offset greenhouse gas emissions through interventions.

Interventions such as forest conservation, afforestation, reforestation, sustainable forest management and climate smart agriculture.

The Ministry of Forestry continues to explore ways to further advance the Government’s commitment towards reducing global carbon emissions through Fiji’s Emissions Reduction Program.

The Emissions Reduction Program (ERP) proposes to the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) under the World Bank of Fiji’s effort to combat climate change through the reduction of greenhouse gases at the rate of two million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in five years.

To ensure this, a second round of stakeholder consultations on Fiji’s ERP is currently underway in Nadi which was opened yesterday by Permanent Secretary for Forests Pene Baleinabuli.

Baleinabuli says the proposal commits about 90 per cent of Fiji’s land mass and includes Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and Taveuni.
