September 9, 2012 7:04 pm

Despite being out of the Pacific Island Forum and negotiations on PACER PLUS, Fiji is keen to see that discussions stay on the right track.

Trade Permanent Secretary Shaheen Ali says trade facilitation issues such as quarantine and customs remain a focal point in PACER PLUS talks with Australia and New Zealand.

He says other Pacific Island leaders are sure to raise these issues as it is of common benefit to small island countries.

Ali adds Fiji is trying to improve its garment industry and border issues is one of the key points to address.

“If you don’t address trade facilitation issues no matter how capable you make duty and other components trade will not take place because there will be non tarrif barrier.”

He says this is one thing Fiji will strongly negotiate on if included back to the Forum
