Fiji’s membership of Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) for the Western Pacific is of extreme value.

This was shared by the Permanent Secretary of Fisheries Craig Strong during the recent IOC of WESTPAC meeting in Manila, Philippines.

Craig says as preparation for the UN decade of ocean science continues, the IOC WESTPAC is critical in framing the scientific research and development of the work of the Ministry of Fisheries.

He says IOC WESTPAC provides significant collaboration, support and cooperation opportunities in the ocean science sphere.

Fiji, Singapore and France, took part in the meeting for the first time.

The WESTPAC science body assists countries with scientific support critical for sustainable fisheries management, coastal biodiversity, protection of coastal population and maintaining eco-system services.
