Fiji has come a long way since we raised our noble banner blue 49 years ago today says Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa.

Speaking at the Fiji Day celebrations in Labasa this morning, Vuniwaqa says Fiji’s independence and subsequent break from monarchical reign is a proud achievement.

She says Fiji has faced great challenges and, at times, upheavals in its short independent history but that’s what building a great nation involves.

Vuniwaqa also took the time to pay tribute and remember the great leaders at various levels, elders who toiled in various sectors, advocates of social issues and human rights, professionals, carers and each and every Fijian who has made heroic sacrifices for the country.

Vuniwaqa acknowledged that the sense of pride that every Fijian feels on Fiji Day is something incredibly special.
Around 300 people from all walks of life turned up for the celebrations held at Subrail Park.

Vuniwaqa adds that Fiji Day today is not about political games or stunts; but it is about the powerful and unbreakable bond of national identity, and celebrating what we have in common, and what we all share.
