Fiji is currently facing a high unemployment rate of eighteen percent for youths and a general unemployment rate of 4.5 percent, which is the lowest unemployment rate in the last fifteen years.

Employment Minister, Jone Usamate says this has been achieved through strong economic management and consistent policies along with targeted investment in infrastructure and service delivery.

Usamate adds the ministry’s National Employment Policy is based on “Moving Fiji Forward” and it recognizes that economic growth is not enough to meet the challenge of increasing employment opportunities.

He stresses there’s a need to ensure that economic growth creates paid work for those who want to earn an income by creating better jobs and improving the working conditions of existing jobholders.

The Minister says the National Employment Policy identifies and implements ways to improve the growth and quality of employment in Fiji.
