“Both Australia and Fiji have a great tradition of peace-keeping operations. You have a lot to teach us from your deep experience in the middle east, Lebanon, Egypt, Sinai. These are lessons that we are pretty keen to learn from you.”

For Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama his visit to the vessel was a trip down memory lane.

He says Fiji will continue to work with Australia to maintain security in the region.

“The first time I stood on the deck here was in 2016 when I thanked the troops for assisting Fijians in the aftermath of cyclone Winston, and again I want to thank you for the continued relationship that we have had in the last decade or so. Our Vuvale relationship I know will continue.”

Defense Minister Inia Seruiratu says Fiji will not hesitate to further pursue opportunities that aim to maintain global peace.

“We have roles to play in the region and of course in terms of global peace as well. Our contributions both Fiji and Australia to global peace have been consistent over the years.”

The Prime Minister’s visit to the HMS Adelaide today signifies the significance of the Vuvale partnership which is expected to be signed by him and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison on Monday.
