The Australian government is keen to re-engage with Fiji and have enacted a number of new agreements to demonstrate their commitment to rebuilding the once terse relationship.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says there is enormous confidence and optimism around the new found friendship which can only get better.

Amongst a number of bilateral agreements between the two governments – Australia has also included Fiji with other 38 countries in its New Colombo Plan.

Under the original plan Australia invited students of other countries to study at their universities, however this has been reversed in Fiji’s favour.

“A number of Australian students made their first choice Fiji as we are going to have students here at the University of the South Pacific and Fiji National University, medical students who are studying obstetrics and gynecology, art students who are studying history and culture and also students studying in the areas of health and the community public health and the like.”

Australia will also provide scholarship to Fijian students to study in Australia.
