Fiji Bureau of Statistics analyses data

February 9, 2016 6:10 pm

The Fiji Bureau of Statistics is now analysing data from the 2013-2014 Household Income and Expenditure Survey to prepare a final report by next month.

National Planning Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the final report will give an insight into how income is earned and spent; the amount of funds required to address poverty; income distribution; education levels and living conditions.

The minister adds this is very complex analytical work to provide poverty estimates and help the government adopt a more targeted approach.

“Any data and data with credibility and integrity is very critical to making key decisions. Even from the first set of analysis from the survey we can see – what are the areas that need to be addressed, where poverty levels have decreased, where it is increasing and how we are able to frame our policies to be able to address these issues faced before us.”

The HIES has found that by 2014, more than fifteen thousand people moved out of poverty which was estimated to be about two hundred and fifty two thousand people in 2009.
