Fiji and Korea work on strengthening ties

The South Korean government and the Korean private sectors stakeholders continue to strengthen its ties with Fiji.

Fiji’s Ambassador to Korea Filimoni Kau says they aim to strengthen defence ties with Korea.

“Now there is some discussions happening in terms of some defence and peacekeeping co-operation with the Ministry of Defence in Korea.”

Kau says talks are also being done to strengthen bilateral trade agreement between Fiji and Korea.

He says Korea is also exploring opportunities on deep sea mining development.

“We are also looking at some programs in fisheries, deep sea exploration we have Korean company Kiost which is undertaking deep sea exploration here.”

Kau adds that sporting cooperation between the two countries is also part of their negotiations.

Scholarship to study in Korea is another area being looked at.

South Korea will be hosting a Korea Pacific Island countries meet this month where it will highlight its development assistance and areas of possible co-operations with the Pacific countries.
