FICAC registers increase in corruption-related complaints

The Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption has seen a gradual increase in the number of complaints against corruption.

FICAC Spokesperson Nandhani Vandhana says 65 corruption-related cases, involving 138 people are currently in court.

‘’All the complaints that are received it goes through our investigation process so once we have enough evidence to charge somebody they are taken to court. So these 65 cases that have been taken to court that are in court right now, all the persons involved have been charged over corruption related offenses as such it is in court and these are from complaints we have received from the members of the public all our cases begin from a complaint’’.

Nandhani says the increase has also been attributed to the awareness that the Commission, stakeholders and media have been promoting.

Since 2007, FICAC has had 68 convicted cases – in relation to corruption and the numbers of persons convicted were 79.
