An organizing committee for a particular festival event has come under the spotlight for allegedly misusing funds.

This was revealed by the Minister for Local Government – Premila Kumar while speaking to Municipal Council CEO’s in a meeting in Nadi today.

However, Kumar did not reveal the particular committee but says she will inform FICAC to conduct an investigation.

She also says that this is an area they’re trying to tighten up and ensure that funds collected during festivals are accounted for.

“What we want is simply to hold all these committees who organize festivals and events to account. They have to disclose how much money was collected and how it was used. The only way we can do that is through the Local Government Act where we can introduced a regulation because at the moment it is just a policy which has been placed on the table for discussions.”

Kumar adds that the organizing committees together with the councils need to offer more to Fijians during the festivals.

She says that every year it’s the same rides, food and float procession.

Kumar stresses that creativity has been missing in these festivals over the past years.
