The Fijian Elections Office meets the requirements of internationally accepted standards for free and fair elections.

The Bangkok Declaration is one such international standard which the FEO is adhering to in line with many other international election practices.

Speaking on FBC TV’s 4 the Record program last night, Supervisor Mohammed Saneem says the Elections Office has tested the Fijian Electoral process and its systems against the Bangkok Declaration.

Saneem says the assessment shows that the FEO meets the minimum requirements.

“If you look at the declaration itself – there are various requirements in the declaration that the Election Management Bodies have to meet. There are certain requirements that external stakeholders have to meet and to some extent I would say that in Fiji they do meet it.”

The Bangkok declaration on the principals of free and fair elections was promulgated in 2012 – a follow-on from the 1992 declaration by the Inter-Parliament Union.
