August 12, 2015 7:18 pm

The Fijian Elections Office has declared the National Union of Hospitality, Catering & Tourism Industry Employees [NUHCTIE] Election null and void.

During polling, it was found that several members of the Trade Union who had paid subscriptions were not present on the listing.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem says an estimated 10 percent of the total union membership have been deprived of the right to vote due to their non-listing.

Another serious matter of concern is that 1,855 members were listed by the Union for the Elections Office whilst in its returns to the Ministry of Labour they indicated 1,500 as valid members of the Union.

The FEO declared the union’s polls null and void on the ground of membership listing irregularities and failure to meet election minimum standards in conducting Trade Union Elections set by the FEO.
