The Fijian Broadcasting Corporation has cancelled its “A Christmas to Remember” event scheduled for Saturday due to the measles outbreak.

This as there are 18 confirmed cases of measles in Fiji with the majority from the Central Division.

“Instead of a Christmas to remember event, which was put together by all our six radio stations English, Hindi and Itaukei language, we are going to go ahead with our toy drive in partnership with Rups Mega Nakasi. So Rups is giving us a thousand dollars’ worth of toys and we’re requesting Fijians to buy a toy for a boy or a girl aged 4-9 years of age, mark it, wrap it and leave it at Rups Mega Nakasi on 14th December on the same day where we planned to do A Christmas To Remember.”

Lochan says the toy drive aims to bring joy to those children who may not have much to celebrate this Christmas.

Head of Health Protection, Dr. Aalisha Sahukhan says they welcome FBC’s efforts in supporting the Ministry to contain this outbreak.

“We are thanking the media company which are coming forward and taking the responsibility and for helping the Ministry of Health control this outbreak through cancelling any of these mass gathering events that you’re holding. The Ministry is working very hard to contain the outbreak and we’re carrying out this mass immunization campaign for the country.”

For further FBC Events, Lochan says they will adhere to the Health Ministry’s advisories as Fijians will remain a priority and will not project an event where people’s health is at risk.
