Cane farmers are urged to put to good use the grants that are made available to them.

Sugar Cane Growers Council Chief Executive Officer, Sundresh Chetty made the plea to farmers in Seaqaqa as he enlightened them on the availability of the Cane Replanting Grant.

He says the onus is on each farmer to ensure the money is used for its intended purpose.

Chetty says the Government has been very supportive of the Cane Replanting Grant over the years and they’ve noticed that growers have not fully utilized the funds made available to them.

“We have noted that in many cases growers have prepared their land but failed to plant the cane and we have also noted that after planting, some farms have been neglected and it has been overgrown with weeds.”

Chetty says there is a monitoring mechanism in place for the execution of grants by farmers but the process is huge as there are thousands of farmers.

He is calling on all growers to do the right thing.
