Farmers trained on silage production

Livestock farmers and agriculture stakeholders were recently trained on silage production as a feed reserve.

The silage production training, organised by the Ministry of Agriculture at its Koronivia Research Station was conducted particularly for key agriculture stakeholders and small holder farmers involved in livestock farming.

Director Animal Health and Production, Tomasi Tunabuna said silage is forage conserved with other agricultural by-products that is preserved through anaerobic fermentation in airtight enclosures.

Tunabuna said that the majority of livestock farms in Fiji are pasture based and the seasonality of growth of pastures affects continuity of available feed to livestock.

Training participants were also informed that silage would be helpful to farmers during natural disasters and during times when farms run short of feed.
