The sugar cane farmers have a reason to smile this Diwali as they will get a certain amount of the 2016 final cane payment today.

Remaining balance of $3.05 per tonne will be paid in January before the new school year.

Chandra says normal deductions will apply in today’s payment including loans from Sugar Cane Growers Fund or the Fiji Development Bank.

”From a FSC point of view we have tried to reduce deduction under fifty percent. The situation may vary between growers. A number of growers may not have much deduction so they will have a good amount of money coming into their pocket tomorrow. Some of them will see a lot of their loan been reduced as their deductions have happened which would mean that in future they will be able to get a better payment when there is a less debt for them.”

The total payment for 2016 season is eighty two dollars which is an increase of seven percent from 2015.

Chandra says the payment will help the sugar cane farmers to prepare well for this year’s Diwali.
