Farmers question access to sugarcane grant
February 7, 2016 11:05 pm
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama was asked why the cane production in Rakiraki has not increased despite government funding under the cane development program.
Satish Narayan, a cane farmer of Rakiraki says he wants to know where the cash grant has gone.
In reply Fiji Sugar Corporation Executive Chair Abdul Khan said it should not be forgotten that the sugar cane industry has been facing dry weather conditions over the past two years.
Khan says despite this the FSC managed to crush 1.85 million tonnes of cane and last season produced 221,000 tonnes of sugar.
The issue was raised during public consultations by the Prime Minister in his West tour.
