A farmer of Cakaudrove who is alleged to have attempted to rape a primary school student has been granted bail.
The man faces a charge of attempted rape and another of sexual assault.
He appeared at the Labasa High Court before Justice Daniel Goundar.
State prosecutors say he had followed the girl, who is also his cousin, into a school compound and attempted to rape her.
Neighbors who heard the child screaming came to her rescue.
The accused had earlier pleaded not guilty to the two charges, saying he couldn’t remember anything as he was drunk.
He was released on a bail bond of $300 each for two sureties with strict bail conditions.
He has been ordered not to return to his village where the incident happened, not to interfere with witnesses, to be on good behaviour, not to drink any alcohol and to report to the Labasa Police Station every Saturday from 6am to 6pm.
The case has been adjourned to March 22nd for a Pre-Trial Conference.
