Experts discuss broadband issues

Huge in-roads have been made in broadband technology around the world.

However – the same cannot be said for Fiji and the Pacific – a telecommunications experts meeting has heard.

Opening the meeting – Communication Permanent Secretary Elizabeth Powell highlights the need for developing a broadband system for the region.

We also know that we have no choice. We cannot be left behind, and we cannot deny our people the advantages they will gain from having a working broadband system in place within the next several years.

She adds modern technology has put Fiji in a good position as we head towards the 2014 elections.

We are doing it electronically, registering people and giving them an ID card with a biometric identifier right on the spot. (And I’m proud to say that we are ahead of schedule on registrations. We now have more than 200,000 people registered to vote.
