Uncontrolled fires continue to be one of the prime causes of damage to the Energy Fiji Limited infrastructure.

Apart from being dangerous and life-threatening, fires cause unwanted power interruptions to Energy Fiji Limited customers.

EFL Chief Executive Hasmukh Patel says it is becoming expensive to replace the burnt poles.

“This wooden power post which was H structure got burnt. Firstly we had to actually construct the road to access that pole and then you know the weather condition was not on our side. The crane truck had some issues so it took a long time to transport the new poles. The reason this happened because someone lit a fire in the vicinity of our wooden power posts. The power poles caught fire and this is what happened.”

EFL is requesting the public to refrain from burning rubbish near the power poles, thereby ensuring continuity of power supply and causing unwarranted damages that compromises safety and is a major hazard.

Patel says it is also dangerous to throw lit cigarettes around exposed areas where power poles are located.
