Evacuee numbers increase

There are now 7,786 people in evacuation centres in the western division.

These includes 4,676 adults and 3,110 children in a total 96 evacuation centres, while a total of 35 schools are being used as evacuation centres.

There are six centres each in Ra and Tavua, 17 in Ba, 18 in Lautoka, 23 in Sigatoka and 26 in Nadi.

Sigatoka has the highest number of evacuees, with 3,007 people taking shelter in evacuation centres.

Schools close for the week

The Ministry of Education confirms that all schools in the western division will remain closed for the entire week.

Ministry permanent secretary, Dr Brij Lal this evening called on both parents and students to exercise caution and to monitor the weather situation through the media.

Lal says the Ministry will monitor the situation and advise when students will be able to return to schools.

Some schools in the western division have been used as evacuation centres.

Schools in the central division will remain open for the time being.
