Parents and guardians have been urged to ensure that their children are vaccinated.
The nationwide meningococcal vaccination campaign was launched by the Ministry of Health yesterday.
The Ministry of Health has acquired over one hundred and twenty-four thousand doses of vaccine for the first phase of the program while another batch of 200,000 doses of vaccine is expected to arrive in the country soon.
Health Minister Rosy Akbar says Vaccination not only protects individuals from life threatening diseases but it also offers protection to the community at large.
“There has been a lot of hard work happening behind the scenes to make the vaccines available for our children and also for the nations’ protection from this deadly disease, I now urge you all parents, guardians, children and friends to make good use of this opportunity, because the cost of having to deal with a meningococcal infection is devastating and costly.”
More than three hundred and thirty-three thousand children between 1 and 19 will be vaccinated during the campaign.
The vaccination program rolls out from Monday.
