Energy Department shift focus to renewable energy

The Energy Department is encouraging most households and businesses to shift their energy sources to renewable energy.

Director Energy Department Paula Katirewa says electrification around the country has increased significantly as the government encourages the use of renewable energy.

“A lot of work has been done and significant improvements have been made on how people view on renewable energy. So now the shift is to renewable energy, there are some issues with respect to reliable supply, when you compare diesel schemes and renewable energy systems but technology is moving forward.”

Katirewa says the government is working to ensure Fiji shifts to renewable energy by 2030.

The Energy Department is currently having a workshop to share their knowledge and broaden their capacity on renewable energy with other Pacific island countries around the region.

The two days’ workshop will end tomorrow.
