A best practice Occupational Health and Safety approach to young workers includes communication and empowerment.

Employment Minister Jone Usamate says communication is a two way dialogue where young workers voices are heard and their opinions taken into account.

He says empowerment is about giving young workers the confidence to challenge more experienced workers and managers.

“Young people should be given safe and healthy jobs that are within their capabilities .They require proper training and supervision .They needs to be actively engaged if they are to take on board the safety culture of their workplace and cooperate on OHS matters.”

Usamate says it is not enough to provide them with a handbook of safety rules.
