An emergency operation center has been activated at the Fiji Navy to support the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited in the aftermath of the MV Suilven sinking yesterday afternoon.
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport – Francis Kean says initial reports from the owners Venu Shipping have indicated that container cargo lashing failure contributed to the capsizing of the ship.
The PS says the necessary arrangements have been put in place
The Fiji Maritime Safety Authority is on standby to monitor the ship and have oil spill equipment on the ready and there is a support ship to assist with the removal of any floating cargo.
Kean adds that MSAF has also been tasked to investigate the incident in which the MV Suilven sunk at the western side entrance of the Suva Harbour traveling from Levuka to Suva.
All 30 crew and 4 passengers were safely evacuated.
