Energy Fiji Limited, together with the government, is working towards getting individuals to generate electricity and sell it back to the grid.

Public Enterprise Minister, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says in order to achieve this a lot of ground work needs to be done.

Sayed-Khaiyum says some requirements involve legal changes and pricing mechanisms which both the utility and the government are working to achieve.

“If you obtain good entrepreneurship skills, you can actually cover your entire roof with solar panels and then the electricity generated can be sold to EFL, you can to some and sell the rest.”

He says EFL is also working on establishing standalone energy generation systems, whereby, rural areas will receive electricity off the grid.

The Minister says this initiative is being carried out with the assistance of the Leonardo Dicaprio Foundation.
