MOE engaging retired teachers to address shortage

The Ministry of Education is engaging retired teachers to address the shortage of teaching staff in the country.

Education Minister Rosy Akbar says there is a shortage of teachers in certain subject area.

Akbar says the ministry is working to get this sorted.

“If we are looking at the shortages in subject areas, yes we are re-engaging retirees in areas which have the shortages. And as and when graduates finish tertiary education, they are given a teaching position within the ministry.”

Opposition MP Aseri Radrodro had questioned the education ministry as what has being done to provide the much needed assistance to students in certain subjects.

In response,Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum re-iterated that the Government is also providing scholarships to teachers to become specialists.

“For teachers who are already engaged in teaching, for them to specialize in certain areas. We provide scholarships for them we pay them to become specialists in Science, Mathematics, or Physics or English.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says shortages have been recorded in Mathematics, Language and other Science subjects around the country.
