The Education Ministry will prioritise the monitoring of grants allocated to schools by the government.

Another issue that was highlighted in the Auditor General’s reports of 2010 to 2012 that was discussed in the Public Accounts Committee meeting is the ministry’s failure to improve infrastructure in the maritime islands.

Acting Permanent Secretary for Education, Kelera Taloga confirms there is a need for more attention to be paid to these schools.

“We need to increase the funds, the building run funds, the capital funds because there are such costs like transportation costs that bites into the budget for these schools.”

It was also found that some schools had been misusing the grants given by Government and using it to either pay off their own loans or giving their grants as a loan to other institutions.

Overpayment of salaries and misuse of school grants given by Government were other issues raised in the Public Accounts Committee meeting.
