Earthquakes no cause for alarm: Finau

August 28, 2014 7:11 pm

Earthquakes have been occurring frequently in and out of Fiji in the past weeks and months but experts say there is no need for alarm.

At four yesterday morning a 5.4 magnitude quake occurred about 233 kilometres North East of Matei, Taveuni.

Director Mineral Resources Malakai Finau says within the last week they have recorded about three to five quakes.

However, he says because the Pacific is prone to earthquakes, it is not an abnormal occurrence.

“There is a pattern and the pattern is the area of location which is along the plate boundaries. Most of the earthquakes are located along these boundaries. We cannot pinpoint where exactly along the plate boundary.”

Yesterday’s quake did not pose any real threat to Taveuni or the Fiji group.
