Speaking to FBC News, Narikoso villager Kelepi Saukitoga says they were preparing for their church service when they saw houses and trees shaking.

Saukitoga says they are all safe and nothing was destroyed.

Narikoso is one of the villages earmarked for relocation this year due to the effects of climate change on the rising sea level at their coastal location.

It’s also believed staff and students at one of the high schools on the island evacuated to the top of the nearby hills as a safety measure.

No tsunami alert has been issued.

The 5.7 magnitude quake was reportedly felt as far as Nadi and Suva.
