Dry spell affects cane production: FSC

October 2, 2017 5:27 pm

The cane production estimate of two million tonnes has now been reduced to one point eight million tonnes for this crushing season.

Fiji Sugar Corporation Chief Operating Officer, Navin Chandra, says the production estimate has been reduced due to the prolonged dry spell affecting the cane belt areas.

Chandra says if this weather pattern remains the figure of one point eight million tonnes will likely reduce further.

However, Chandra says the dry spell for the sugarcane industry is nothing new, as they have experienced this in the past as well.

He says this is why the FSC is working on a special plan to determine how the industry can cope with such conditions in the future.

Chandra says the Corporation’s first move is to use the irrigation system for the cane fields.
