Drug treatment centers needed

August 15, 2019 4:45 pm

More needs to be done in regards to substance abuse as the use and discovery of hard drugs such as methamphetamine and cocaine in Fiji are increasing.

The current health facilities are able to look after people when they come in and get them over the acute phase, however continuous support and treatment is needed.

The Volatabu Group Chief Executive Kalesi Volatabu says a long term healing center is required in order for the addicts to fully recover.

“A 28-day program does not work so obviously we need a minimum of at least 3 to 4 months in order for someone who has been heavily addicted Meth, ice cocaine, whatever the case may be to fully clear their body and clear their minds. “

Volatabu says addicts cannot be prescribed with medicine.

“So it has to be a drug-free rehab. A short term does not work and obviously, we do not have that facility in Fiji right now. We don’t have a facility that can hold people in the long period residential rehab.”

The Volatabu Group is an NGO that advocates and creates awareness on drugs in Fiji.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Dr. Ifereimi Waqainabete says currently they’re in the discussion phase with the Defense Minister and other stakeholders to wisely tackle the issue.
