Two children drowned in separate incidences over the weekend prompting police to issue stern warnings to parents and guardians about supervising their children.
A ten-year- old boy drowned in the Vitogo River in Lautoka yesterday afternoon while a six-year-old boy drowned in a river at Waidina in Naitasiri around the same time.
Spokesperson Ana Naisoro says both incidences will be thoroughly investigated.
“At this point in time we have directed our investigators to look into the issue of negligence on the part of the parents because as one case that was reported the child allegedly was swimming alone at sea and he was just six years old which is a real concern to us. So our investigations will be digging in deeper as to the circumstances surrounding as to why these children were swimming alone as being stated.”
According to Naisoro, the drowning death toll now stands and 55 compared to 30 for the same period last year.
