December 27, 2012 9:19 pm
Another two people have become drowning fatalities in the last 24 hours, bringing the drowning toll to 70 compared to 43 for the same period last year.
In the first incident a 3 year old girl drowned while swimming with her brothers and sisters at the Wainitogoru River in Navua yesterday afternoon.
The father of the 3-year-old discovered her missing and upon conducting search for her found in chest deep water.
She was taken to the Navua hospital and was pronounced dead.
In the second incident a 46 year old farmer drowned while swimming in the Dreketi River yesterday afternoon.
The deceased was playing a game with his daughter and a friend by the river bank when the incident happened.
His body was recovered half an hour later and was rushed to the Dreketi Health Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Post mortem on both the deceased is expected to be conducted soon.
The Fiji Police Force says with only a few days remaining for 2012 to come to an end it is unfortunate to record more drowning cases despite the number of advisories being issued.
